Modern Apprenticeships (MAs) are a bridge between the world of education and the world of work. They provide an opportunity for Young People to train while on the job, and get a qualification, earn a wage and work towards a career. Employers have the chance to recruit highly motivated young people and help train them in appropriate work-focussed skills. MAs are available in 80 different sectors of industry and commerce. MAs usually lasting up to three years, offer work based training at two levels: Foundation leading to National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) level 2 and Advanced leading to NVQ level 3. There is a network of approved training providers with training standards ensured by the Learning and Skills Council (LSCs) The content of training is designed by employers to closely match the needs of specific industry sectors. LSCs can provide help to companies through guidance and finance. By the year 2004 the target is for 25% of all people aged between 16-21 to enter Modern Apprenticeships. A new Apprenticeship Diploma is being prepared which embraces NVQs, key skills and in depth technical knowledge. By 2004 it is hoped to offer a basic entitlement to a MA for all young people aged 16-17 who have 5 Certificates of General Education at grades A to C, including Maths and English. (A* being the highest grade).
