Short description:
The general objective of the Pilot Project "Down-Up" is to find new strategies for improvement of the social and vocational integration and training of people with Down Syndrome.

The specific objectives we aim to achieve with "Down-Up" are:

To research the social and vocational situation of the population with Down Syndrome older than 16 years of age.

To place young people with Down Syndrome in ordinary companies.

To promote a democratic culture of respect for people's diversity. This culture should be reflected in the vocational training and labour market.

To advance in the construction of a full citizenship for people with Down Syndrome.

Research-study on the social and vocational situation of people older than 16 years of age with Down Syndrome within the contexts of the project partners (Granada, Spain; Liverpool, United Kingdom and Potsdam, Germany). With this study we aim to establish: the level of social and vocational integration of this group, the most representative jobs, the most common type(s) of contract, the type(s) of employers?
Employer-Awareness Campaign
Aimed at potential employers of people with Down Syndrome.

Recruitment of participants (people with Down Syndrome and companies).

Initial assessment of the educational needs and the professional interests of people with Down Syndrome.

Identification of "open vacancies" at the heart of the participating companies.

Design and development of Educational Programmes and Methodologies of Intervention.

Vocational training for trainers on the job, so that they can handle successfully the vocational training of people with Down Syndrome, both to develop the courses exclusively aimed at these people and to make curricular adaptations in the context of "normalised courses".
Training of natural supports.
Training in specific jobs of the people with Down Syndrome, so that they can access the "normal" labour market.
Design, development and meta-evaluation of the Project Evaluation Plan (Internal and External) in order to improve the quality.

Promotion. For the promotion of the project and the recruitment of participants (young people with Down Syndrome and companies), apart from the local communication resources (TV, radio and press), the IMFE has a radio station (IMFE-Radio: 88.8 FM), which will be an important instrument for the promotion of the project and its results and for the Employer-Awareness Campaign.

European Conference for the Promotion of "Down-Up": it will be held at the end of the project, in the first fortnight of December 2002..
